Unlike the original Circuit Hero which featured Honda Fits and Suzuki Swifts, Circuit Hero One now receives entries from more high-end sports cars. With years of development, a lot of racing teams have come into being and it has been getting increasingly difficult to accommodate all the entries. Some drivers also prefer to race against stronger opposition, therefore the race organizers have created Circuit Hero One for the more powerful and more highly tuned entries.

Actually all one has to do is look at the cars that have been entered, such as Mercedes C63, BMW M3 and Ferrari F360. Cars that can break into 1:50s, an indicator of good speed at ZIC, are certainly not few. With 24 cars removed to form Circuit Hero One, Circuit Hero Two still enjoys a very healthy 42 entries.

From Saturday morning’s qualifying results, Mario Ferraris’ Mercedes C63 is on pole position. William O’Brien, in his Caterham, lines up second.

As the track has just cleaned up the oil from the previous race, there is a lot of sawdust around the track and they get blown into the air as race cars drive past.

The race begins after the warm-up lap. Mario Ferraris makes a bad getaway and is swallowed by the field. But he has a powerful motor under his right foot. Just a matter of 2 corners later, he uses it to its full potential and claims his rightful place, at the very front. William O’Brien, who sprinted to the lead, is now second. No. 10 Li Qing-Xin is third. By the end of lap 1, the Mercedes C63 has opened up a huge gap of 7 seconds.

In the second group, the Ferrari F360 of Byron Tong and the BMW M3 of Zhu Xiao-Dong are running nose to tail. Both have kept their fight very clean. Meanwhile the pink coloured Merc C63 continues to motor away, on lap 4 his lead is as long as the main straight is, over O’Brien’s Caterham.

The BMW M3 finally finds a way past the Ferrari at turn 1. Zhu Xiao-Dong cuts into the inside line but Byron Tong manages to defend his line. But at turn 4, Zhu Xiao-Dong tries again and Byron defends over anxiously and allows the M3 to pass around the outside. A lap later, maybe eager to fight back, Byron makes a mistake and spins off into the sand trap, thus retiring from the race.

Liu Jiang then tries to catch Li Qing-Xin in front of him. Li’s Ariel Atom is a lightweight sportscar, its philosophy is vastly different from the M3. Li Qing-Xin is a skilled driver, although under pressure, he defends very well and stays on his racing line. At this time Mario Ferraris’ lead is over 41 seconds. His fastest lap of 1:44s is way quicker than everyone else, who can only manage about 1:50s.

On the last lap, Mario Ferraris’s Mercedes C63 wins by a massive 55 seconds. His fastest lap is an astonishing 1:44.179s. William O’Brien is second in his Caterham. Li Qing-Xin finishes third while Zhu Xiao-Dong is fourth.

Bill: “Track is just great!!! Car was way better than I expected for a “track car”…The race spec car will be real good.”

Bill O’Brien next race will be at Pan Delta Super Autumn Racing Festival in Zhuhai. Where he will pit his race winning Caterham R500 against 800bhp GTR and 700bhp Evolution.

Mclaren MP4-12C: The Capsule of Speed

The Mclaren MP4-12C, ok  so everybody’s first question how does it compare with Ferrari 458. Having been driving the Ferrari 458 a lot for the past month, she is still the benchmark of Super Car no doubt. I had to be fair and honest when I came to the Mclaren, really start with a fresh page. Of course expectation were high as the last Mclaren was in a league of its own with the F1. MP4-12C is designed with a slight different concept in mind, a Super Car with user friendliness and won’t be a pain for daily (or in most cases weekly) use.

On the out set from the concept drawings the car seems to be focus in the functional direction, where aerodynamic and engineering dictates the main focus of the exterior design. Which is where the problem lies, there is absolutely nothing “wrong” with the car, but she just seem so CAD (computer aided design). I seriously like the shape fast flowing shape, the scissors doors and even more stunning sitting still with them opened, just like an eagle spreading its wings. The discrete, hyper urban tail lights and exhaust exits then how it integrates seamlessly with the hydraulic spoiler. Everything is so precise and seamlessly purposeful.

First thing first, as a frequent used car, it does have some annoying issues, the “slide to unlock” door, and it’s not just me, the dealer did advise on how to “more easily” get the door opening mechanism right with slide and pause at the end of the motion etc. That didn’t really work, the hit rate is still around 30%, and truth be told it’s fancy, but do we really need more trouble with opening the door and maybe considering sometimes the weather is not always kind. More below par features like some of the interior touch are less than luxury as expected in a car in this price range, the sound system seems rather incompetent. The media system is fancy, but only to find the system is rather “simple” comparing to even typical German sedans, system from the likes of Audi, Mercedes, BMW etc. Offers way more features and important information to the driver. So it seems initially it does not make the cut for the daily super car that we expect this century.

But as a super car to drive it’s simply epic…!!! The engineers in Woking simply got the formula for the dynamics so RIGHT. The way this car accelerates, brakes and ride through corners is just an absolute eye opener. Some basic facts 3.8 V8 Turbo, pumping out 600hp and 650Nm of torque, 4WD, fully independent suspension, monocoque chassis. These features don’t seem so intriguing in words, but how the Mclaren team engineered then re-engineered and scrutinized the performance to squeeze out the maximum performance and dynamics is nothing short of a miracle. How this MP4-12C can be so brimming fast and yet so comfortable just makes this car so brilliant. Blasting down highways, taking it through sweeping corners is just such a calming act. Seriously a capsule of speed.

Last question, which one? The 458 or MP4-12C? Both are brilliant in their own right, the MP4-12C is a monster is precision engineering in dynamics and cutting the laws of physics, the 458 is just a work of art in every sense, it’s made with passion and soul, and it connects you to your heart within!

從概念,MP4-12c是集中于它功能上,空氣動力學和工程規定已大至定下外觀設計的主要焦點。這就是問題所在,它絕對是沒有什麼“錯誤”,但它顯得如此CAD(計算機輔助設計)。我也很喜歡它流線的形態,它的剪刀門即使停下來只把門打開這型態也是這麼驚人,就像一隻雄鷹張開翅​​膀。超前衛的尾燈和雙出排氣,與液壓擾流尾翼做成完美結合。絕妙,精確。

作為一台日常駕駛的超級跑車,它確實有一些煩人的的問題,“Slide to Unlock”的車門,不只是我,就算是經銷商教了我們這秘訣我們也覺得這是不方便,命中率仍然是30%左右,說實話開門真的不需要更多的麻煩。其他如內龐方面也不見得豪華,在這個價格範圍內的超級跑車,音響系統似乎相當無能。媒體系統是花哨,民用品牌如奧迪,奔馳,寶馬等的系統比這實用很多。如此看來它不太悉合做一台日常駕駛的超級跑車。

但作為一台專注速度的超級跑車他的確是非凡……!!在英國Woking的工程師把物理和動力學完全改寫。這車的剎車,過彎,加速是多麼大開眼界。3.8 V8渦輪增壓引擎,泵出600HP和650NM的扭矩,四輪驅動,完全獨立的懸掛,硬殼式底盤。書面上這些數字已經不是天方夜談,但邁凱輪的設計團隊如何將這些性能,擠壓出來令他有如此厲害的性能簡直是一個奇蹟。MP4-12C能夠如此舒適還可以以非比沉常的速度在路面上行走,只是非常驚人。直爆公路,掃過長灣,就是這樣輕易的事情。

最後一個問題, 458或MP4-12C?兩者也有自己的長處,在的MP4-12C是一台打破物理規律的怪物。458是一台超凡藝術型,夾帶無限的激情和靈魂,連繫你的心!

Everyone who might be interested in getting a sporty hatchback is faced with many options; VW Golf, Renault Clio, Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Focus etc. Many of them award winning, offering dynamic driving and great practicality. 1 series was never renouned for practicality, it was good with the dynamic handling with it’s FR layout (Front engine, rear drive) but is it justified? Let’s find out.

New 2011 SLK Put the Smile back
Back in 1996 the first SLK was a distinctive affair, with it’s roadster layout and a hard convertible roof. It offered a combination that the market did not have; a open top sports roadster and a hard top coupe, but it’s been 15 years already, other brands like BMW and VW have been making different variants of the hard top convertible. With this new SLK, has it got what it takes to stay on top.
The first thing you notice is that the styling was given a musculin make over. It has a much stronger sense of aggression in its styling. There are resembulance with the big brother SLS, but given that the SLS feels more like a cruiser, the SLK feels more versatile for different occasion. The new sculpled headlights and front grille, pronounces the stance of the SLK. With the roof up or down, the proportion of the car is perfect. It doesn’t feel nose heavy like the Beemer, the body and rear has a beautiful ratio like a fit female figure. It is very diffcult to get the figure right for a convertible, with all things considered, roof up or down, my god it looks beautiful.
We’re testing the SLK 350 Blue Efficiency, V6 engine 3,500cc. Power Output 306hp, 370 Nm of torque. 0-100km/h is done in 5.6s. Please do this car a justice, switch that ECO mode off. Once you get pass the start – stop traffic (which there is a lot in Hong Kong), unleash the “modest” power and torque, you find youelf driving a car that is totally in a different era to the last model.
If you put down the hammer, the car responses with urge, and there is equal feed back into your eyes, ears and body. You know some cars might have a huge amount of noise and it’s actually not going any where, well this definitely has the sound and the speed sorted. 7 G-tronic, is a good gearbox as we have tested in the C-Class before, it’s not as samurai as the dual clutch thing from VW, but it’s not far behind, espeically the gear ratio is very well placed with this engine. Click up or down, the transmission response with a sure footed change, with a good mechanical engagement.
Now entering the country lanes, the roof operates at some minimal speed of 5km/h which was a bit disappointing as I was looking to change while moving at a slow pace, but 5km/h was crowling speed, so you might as well just stop the car and do it. Roof down back to business, now the really sensation comes. The exhaust note hurls back into the cockpit with your commited driving, ride the wave of sound, wind and speed. This car’s cornering is superb, it’s not that it can go round a corner 0.1 second faster, in actual fact it might be slower, but you feel the car on the limit with a well communicated feedback from the chassis.
With the Porscher and Beemer, when you’re sitting behind the wheel, you feel you have to drive serious, but this SLK is NOT, you can BE Stupid, and have Fun with this car, you don’t have to look serious, but you’ll still look good (actually very good), just let your cheek tighten and smile while you enjoy this car.
