Ever since 1993, Ferrari’s V8 mid-engined berlinetta models have provided the ideal basis for a single-make racing series that has demonstrated itself the ideal springboard for many Ferrari drivers to further motor sports experience.

With the launch of the 360 Modena Challenge in 2000, the level of competitiveness of the Ferrari Challenge series took a huge step forward. Along with the F50, the 360 Modena was instrumental in pushing the boundaries of road-car production ever closer to the company’s racing roots, with uncompromising engineering and, in particular, levels of aerodynamic development previously unheard of on a series production car.

Early development work on the Challenge version of the car was extremely promising, with the 360 proving lighter, faster and sharper-handling than the outgoing F355.

Since the introduction of the 360 Modena, Ferrari has received numerous requests for factory-prepared cars for other international championships. With the help of factory backing, the JMB Competition team 360 fought off the Porsche competition to take the 2001 FIA N-GT World Championship team and drivers’ titles.

On the strength of this showing, Ferrari has decided to produce a specific model – the 360 GT – derived from the Challenge car for privateers in the FIA N-GT and A.C.O. (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) championships in 2002. Production will be strictly limited to around 30 cars over the next three years and the ex-factory price (ie. excluding tax and delivery) is 382,000 Euros for the FIA version, and 402,000 Euros for the ACO version. The two versions differ exclusively for the aerodynamic packages and, in the case of the FIA car, the adoption of the F1-style shift.

Ferrari 458 Challenge 2014 Calendar – Are you ready?

The new season for Ferrari 458 Challenge 2014 kicks off next week in Daytona, USA. The new season welcomes the new 458 Challenge Evoluzione upgrade, with obvious aerodynamic enhancements.

The key difference is the rear wing, which has been developed using experience gained in GT racing. The increased down-force generated by the wing, balanced at the front by work carried out to the splitter and the under-tray, is said to allow drivers to extend the limits of the car, meaning higher cornering and top speeds.

Ferrari says drivers of the 458 Challenge Evoluzione can expect improved performance, both in terms of laps times and over long distances, compared to the outgoing car. Expect a Fiorano lap time less than the 1:16.5 set by the 458 Challenge back in 2010.

On the sporting side, the most significant changes concern the format of the weekend (a qualifying session and its relative race on Saturday, a further qualifying and the second race on Sunday, an increase of more than four hours total driving time,) the introduction of a handicap system (the first three in each race will each get a grid penalty for the next race – 6 places for the winner, 4 for second and two for third – , only one driver allowed per car and a split in the Trofeo Pirelli classification between a Pro and an Am category.

The points system covers the top 10 in each category (20, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1) as well as a point for each event entered, each pole position and each fastest race lap.

The Asia Pacific series gets underway in Sepang 21-23 February with the Ferrari Racing Day, which is then repeated in Sydney on -13 April for the start of the Oceania part of the season. Shanghai (6-8 June) will host a scaled down version of Racing Days which will be repeated with an identical format from 19 to 21 September in Fuji: in between there will be a round in Inje (4-6 July) and at another Japanese venue (22-24 August.)

The Finali Mondiali, which will also feature the final rounds of all three championships, will for the first time take place outside Europe, at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit from 3 to 6 December.

Spy shot: 458 Challenge Evoluzione testing at Maranello

Having completed its development on track, the launch of the 458 Challenge Evoluzione is fast approaching as it will be shown to customers on 11 November at the Mugello Circuit, the day after the Ferrari Challenge Finali Mondiali. Its most striking feature is clearly the rear wing: the 458 Challenge Evoluzione makes full use of the experience gathered in GT racing, in particular on the aerodynamic front. The increased down-force generated by the wing, balanced at the front by work carried out to the splitter and the floor, allows drivers to make full use of the 458 Challenge Evoluzione’s dynamics and performance, while improving performance both in terms of laps times and over long distances.

Unlike the original Circuit Hero which featured Honda Fits and Suzuki Swifts, Circuit Hero One now receives entries from more high-end sports cars. With years of development, a lot of racing teams have come into being and it has been getting increasingly difficult to accommodate all the entries. Some drivers also prefer to race against stronger opposition, therefore the race organizers have created Circuit Hero One for the more powerful and more highly tuned entries.

Actually all one has to do is look at the cars that have been entered, such as Mercedes C63, BMW M3 and Ferrari F360. Cars that can break into 1:50s, an indicator of good speed at ZIC, are certainly not few. With 24 cars removed to form Circuit Hero One, Circuit Hero Two still enjoys a very healthy 42 entries.

From Saturday morning’s qualifying results, Mario Ferraris’ Mercedes C63 is on pole position. William O’Brien, in his Caterham, lines up second.

As the track has just cleaned up the oil from the previous race, there is a lot of sawdust around the track and they get blown into the air as race cars drive past.

The race begins after the warm-up lap. Mario Ferraris makes a bad getaway and is swallowed by the field. But he has a powerful motor under his right foot. Just a matter of 2 corners later, he uses it to its full potential and claims his rightful place, at the very front. William O’Brien, who sprinted to the lead, is now second. No. 10 Li Qing-Xin is third. By the end of lap 1, the Mercedes C63 has opened up a huge gap of 7 seconds.

In the second group, the Ferrari F360 of Byron Tong and the BMW M3 of Zhu Xiao-Dong are running nose to tail. Both have kept their fight very clean. Meanwhile the pink coloured Merc C63 continues to motor away, on lap 4 his lead is as long as the main straight is, over O’Brien’s Caterham.

The BMW M3 finally finds a way past the Ferrari at turn 1. Zhu Xiao-Dong cuts into the inside line but Byron Tong manages to defend his line. But at turn 4, Zhu Xiao-Dong tries again and Byron defends over anxiously and allows the M3 to pass around the outside. A lap later, maybe eager to fight back, Byron makes a mistake and spins off into the sand trap, thus retiring from the race.

Liu Jiang then tries to catch Li Qing-Xin in front of him. Li’s Ariel Atom is a lightweight sportscar, its philosophy is vastly different from the M3. Li Qing-Xin is a skilled driver, although under pressure, he defends very well and stays on his racing line. At this time Mario Ferraris’ lead is over 41 seconds. His fastest lap of 1:44s is way quicker than everyone else, who can only manage about 1:50s.

On the last lap, Mario Ferraris’s Mercedes C63 wins by a massive 55 seconds. His fastest lap is an astonishing 1:44.179s. William O’Brien is second in his Caterham. Li Qing-Xin finishes third while Zhu Xiao-Dong is fourth.

24-26th August, SMD Club HK membersroar up to Zhuhai to enjoy a fantastic weekend of exoticsuper car and speed at Zhuhai International Circuit, China. With more than 40 cars enrolled for the track day including; Mclaren MP4-12CFerrari 458 Italia, 430 GT3, Lamborghini Gallardo,Porsche 991 and Cayman etc.

David is the third time coming to Zhuhai International Circuit, always had his target of supercar ownership since being a university graduate. 2008 his aspirations came true, spent about 2 million to buy his first Porsche 911, in just a few years has owned eight super cars. This time he was driving his red Ferrari 458 Italia. “I still favor Ferrari, for me it must be red, this is classic” said David. As long as their is a new Ferrari, even if there is no commissioning date, loyal fans will first put down deposit down payment, David is one of them.

David is a private practitioner, works hard through the week, and don’t get many chance to leave Hong Kong, so he particularly cherish every opportunity to attend motorsport activities “Love that sense of speed and excitement.” See him 100% focused, you’d know the race circuit is a paradise where can forget all the troubles.

SMD Club Member Vincent Challenging the Circuit:

When he was 16 years old, Vincent who studied in Sydney, Australia used his cars as “transport”, until he was 20, where he was brought to the track with his friends, then just fell in love. Since returning to Hong Kong 2 years ago, got connected with like minded, and went to Morning Drive every week. Also an enthusiiastic track day participant. “The main difference between Track dayand morning drive is you’re much safer on a race track, you can push hard and find the limit which also helps with with driving on the road, making the right moves and knowing what to do, right.” said Vincent.

Apart from his super car, Vincent also own a race prepared track car. With full roll cage, 2 bucket seats, and totally stripped out for minimum weight. This car demand more advance driving skills, from braking, steering, throttle, all had to be calculated, it’s very challenging.

SMD Club Member Jacky and a Young Professional:

One of the youngest participant Jacky is a huge car fan like his father. He used to sit beside his father when he was young and really enjoy the speed and excitement. Jacky went to US and got his license when he was 15. Studied mechanical engineering, during vocations, he would join the local races and climb into professional ranks. Jacky started to handle more matters from his father, so had to put aside this interest for the moment. So joining these motorsport event and track day is a great way to fulfill his passion.

賽道的浪漫

在賽道上,掌握加、減速及入彎的角度最考技術,正合追求征服感的男人。大直路極速加速是超跑的強項,每過完一個大彎,車手都會趁機將車的極限速度施展出 來,原裝超跑最快時速逾230公里,相等於飛機起飛時在跑道上行駛的速度。那種快感連作為乘客的我也一試上癮,何況是一手操作的車手。在車裏我看到車主們 駕馭一頭野獸時的專注,在車外我又看到他們每完成一圈時展露的滿意笑容,就好像體操場上的運動員做出完美動作後的自信,我知,這就是男士一直追求的浪漫。

忠實法拉利迷 David Ip

已是第三次到珠海賽車的葉盛輝醫生(David),大學時駕駛爸爸送贈的日本車上學已立下目標──要擁有屬於自己的Supercar。2008年願望成 真,一擲近200萬買入人生第一部Porsche911,短短幾年間先後擁有過八部跑車。當日他駕着紅色法拉利458 Italia,「最喜愛的始終是法拉利,一定是買紅色,這才夠經典。」只要法拉利有新車的消息一出,即使未知投產日期,忠實車迷就會先行放下30萬定金預 訂,葉醫生就是其中一分子。
私人執業的葉醫生,一星期工作六天半,替病人做完大手術後又不能隨意離開香港,所以特別珍惜每次出席賽車活動的機會, 「就是喜歡那種刺激和速度感」。看他駕車時百分百專注,就知道賽車場是個能讓他完全忘掉煩惱的樂土。

挑戰「場車」高難度 Vincent Lam

16歲到澳洲悉尼升學的Vincent一直只把車當交通工具,直至20歲,認識一班參與賽車運動的好友,把他帶「落場」,一試成癮。兩年前舉家回流香港, 經朋友介紹才發現香港也有一班同好,幾乎每星期必到Morning Drive,更成為Track Day「鐵腳」。「Track Day與Morning Drive最大的分別是在賽車場比公路安全,你可以將車的極限逼出來,試過極限有助以後在公路駕駛,若出現問題都懂得反應及救車。」
除了在賽車場 駕駛他的超跑,Vincent更專誠買一輛最原始、最機械化的「場車」。車內只有防滾架、兩個座位,每個組件以電線簡單連接,務求將車的重量降到最低,增 加速度。對駕駛技術的要求極高。加速、收油、扭軚,都必先計算好,是一項極具挑戰性的訓練。

年輕專業車手 Jacky Sin

最年輕的參加者Jacky與爸爸一樣是個超級跑車迷。自小坐在爸爸旁,看着他「逢車過車」非常有型,15歲時選擇到美國留學,都是因為當地15歲半便可報 考車牌。大學選科也只選與汽車有關的機械工程,沒有課堂的時候,就參與當地的賽車,儲分成為職業車手。今年初接手爸爸的公司,令他不得不放下多年興趣,惟 有靠參加車會舉辦的活動止一止賽車癮。

Mclaren MP4-12C: The Capsule of Speed

The Mclaren MP4-12C, ok  so everybody’s first question how does it compare with Ferrari 458. Having been driving the Ferrari 458 a lot for the past month, she is still the benchmark of Super Car no doubt. I had to be fair and honest when I came to the Mclaren, really start with a fresh page. Of course expectation were high as the last Mclaren was in a league of its own with the F1. MP4-12C is designed with a slight different concept in mind, a Super Car with user friendliness and won’t be a pain for daily (or in most cases weekly) use.

On the out set from the concept drawings the car seems to be focus in the functional direction, where aerodynamic and engineering dictates the main focus of the exterior design. Which is where the problem lies, there is absolutely nothing “wrong” with the car, but she just seem so CAD (computer aided design). I seriously like the shape fast flowing shape, the scissors doors and even more stunning sitting still with them opened, just like an eagle spreading its wings. The discrete, hyper urban tail lights and exhaust exits then how it integrates seamlessly with the hydraulic spoiler. Everything is so precise and seamlessly purposeful.

First thing first, as a frequent used car, it does have some annoying issues, the “slide to unlock” door, and it’s not just me, the dealer did advise on how to “more easily” get the door opening mechanism right with slide and pause at the end of the motion etc. That didn’t really work, the hit rate is still around 30%, and truth be told it’s fancy, but do we really need more trouble with opening the door and maybe considering sometimes the weather is not always kind. More below par features like some of the interior touch are less than luxury as expected in a car in this price range, the sound system seems rather incompetent. The media system is fancy, but only to find the system is rather “simple” comparing to even typical German sedans, system from the likes of Audi, Mercedes, BMW etc. Offers way more features and important information to the driver. So it seems initially it does not make the cut for the daily super car that we expect this century.

But as a super car to drive it’s simply epic…!!! The engineers in Woking simply got the formula for the dynamics so RIGHT. The way this car accelerates, brakes and ride through corners is just an absolute eye opener. Some basic facts 3.8 V8 Turbo, pumping out 600hp and 650Nm of torque, 4WD, fully independent suspension, monocoque chassis. These features don’t seem so intriguing in words, but how the Mclaren team engineered then re-engineered and scrutinized the performance to squeeze out the maximum performance and dynamics is nothing short of a miracle. How this MP4-12C can be so brimming fast and yet so comfortable just makes this car so brilliant. Blasting down highways, taking it through sweeping corners is just such a calming act. Seriously a capsule of speed.

Last question, which one? The 458 or MP4-12C? Both are brilliant in their own right, the MP4-12C is a monster is precision engineering in dynamics and cutting the laws of physics, the 458 is just a work of art in every sense, it’s made with passion and soul, and it connects you to your heart within!

從概念,MP4-12c是集中于它功能上,空氣動力學和工程規定已大至定下外觀設計的主要焦點。這就是問題所在,它絕對是沒有什麼“錯誤”,但它顯得如此CAD(計算機輔助設計)。我也很喜歡它流線的形態,它的剪刀門即使停下來只把門打開這型態也是這麼驚人,就像一隻雄鷹張開翅​​膀。超前衛的尾燈和雙出排氣,與液壓擾流尾翼做成完美結合。絕妙,精確。
